Book Review: Mister Seahorse

15 Feb

Eric Carle is well-known and loved for his artistic style, wonderful stories and ability to incorporate some unusual aspect into his books.  Mister Seahorse is no exception.  Filled with fun fish facts, a lesson on animal camouflage and an ode to fathers, this is a book that I am surprised I hadn’t come across sooner.  While I knew that the male seahorse cares for their eggs, I had no idea so many other “daddy” sea creatures did the same.  Inside this colorful book you will find four see-through pages designed to show how different fish are able to hide under the sea.  At 7 months, Little Lucy is a still a bit too young to sit still long enough for this picture book, but children over the age of 2 will be delighted.  You can view a short 3 minute video of Eric Carle working on an illustration for Mister Seahorse at his website.  Do you have a favorite Eric Carle book?  I know my teacher friends out there have some wonderful art projects to accompany their favorites.
