Book Review: To Market, To Market

26 Feb

In this very fun spin-off of the old nursery rhyme, an elderly woman makes many trips to market to buy a variety of animals only to have them turn her house upside down.  Wisely, she returns to the store with the wild animals in tow to buy vegetables for soup which all enjoy.  The clever and colorful illustrations, overlaid upon black and white photographs, come to life as they seem to explode from the page.  I love the expressions on this haggard looking woman’s face and her frumpy, yet vintage inspired outfit.  I just know young children will love to chime in with the “Uh-oh!” that repeats on each page as the different animals are brought home.  I found this great pre-K lesson with many different activities to go along with this book (making lists and shopping for pretend groceries, vegetable print art, measuring fun with water and kitchen utensils are just a few of the fun ideas included).
