Book Review: Lulu and the Brontosaurus

Lulu is a very spoiled little girl who always gets what she wants.  “Tons of candy.  Tons of toys.  Tons of watching tons of cartoons on TV.”  Until one day when Lulu decides that she wants a brontosaurus for her birthday.  When her parents finally refuse her, Lulu packs a suitcase full of things like pickle sandwiches and heads into the forest to find that brontosaurus.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Lulu’s adventure and all that she learns along the way.  The ending has a few fun surprises to delight young readers and whimsical illustrations to enjoy along the way.  Written by Judith Viorst, a beloved children’s author, who has written other outstanding books like “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”.

Book Review: Brownie and Pearl Take a Dip

I have been hearing really good things about “Brownie and Pearl”, a new, early reader series by Cynthia Rylant.  Sure enough, all copies, of all eight book in the series, were checked out at our local library.  I put one on hold and finally picked it up last week.  I was expecting the smaller size of an early reader but found this larger, square book equally appealing. Brownie is a very cute brown-haired girl with pigtails and Pearl is her cat.  In “Take a Dip”  Brownie and Pearl decide to go cool off in the little blue pool on a hot, summer day.  What a great book for beginning readers!  The illustrations are bright and colorful, not too busy.  The words on the page are big and bold (great for pointing and tracking words) with about one to three sentences per page.  Brownie even looks a little bit like my Little Lucy!  I can’t wait for her to read them… in a few more years.

Book Review: Tales for Very Picky Eaters

This year’s winner of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award is a very silly beginning reader book for picky eaters everywhere.  James doesn’t want to eat broccoli (“It’s disgusting”), oatmeal (“Lumpy oatmeal makes me gag”), lasagna (“It smells funny”), milk (“Milk is repulsive”), or eggs (“Eggs are slimy”).  However, his dad has some very silly tales to tell that may convince him otherwise.  There are five zany chapters to delight young readers and may spark some silly stories about food of your own.
